Atenea Berumen-Solórzano
Born in Mexico City, I come from an interdisciplinary background having studied my bachelor’s in Environmental Engineering at the Universidad Popular Autónoma del Estado de Puebla (UPAEP) where I focused on the abundance, distribution and richness of aquatic birds at the Valsequillo Dam in Puebla, Mexico.
During my undergraduate studies I had the opportunity to study abroad at the University of Eastern Finland (Joensuu, Finland) the course in Environmental Science and Forestry, where I was able to complete an eight-week internship at the ‘Lake ecosystems and food webs’ research group about microalgal culturing techniques and fatty acid analyses.
In 2015 I came to the University of Glasgow to do my MSc in Sustainable Energy where I focused on developing a simulation on the irradiance distribution on microalgal photobioreactors, as well as analysing the lipid content of a new microalgal species (Vacuoliviride crystalliferum). In 2018 I returned to the University of Glasgow to do my PhD in Mechanical Engineering, where I am developing a microalgal biofilm-based photobioreactor that aims to maximise the lipid yields of microalgae in order to enhance biofuels production.
